Introduction
My capstone project was the writing of Skyline's 2021 Spring musical: 2020: The Musical (A Working Title). I was the author of three song that made it into the final product including The Renaissance of Wiki How, Everything is Fine, and Redemption. All of which are represented in the following.

The Renaissance of Wiki How (Sourdough)
|
Sourdough was the first song I wrote for 2020: The Musical (A Working Title). It––as is on-brand with the majority of the musical–– is one big joke. Writing the musical, many of us wanted to be carful not to take ourselves too seriously, and this song is exemplary of that pursuit. Sourdough, at its core is a rock ballad poking fun at the trend of making sourdough bread over quarantine.
I am of the opinion this song is an accumulation of the entirety of my experience in comedic theatre. It screams musical theatre comedy, and I like to think it is a great addition to the students' perspective of the most challenging year of our time. |

Everything is Fine
|
Everything is Fine in one word is representative of dread. As the act II opening, it leads the show into its darker half with an ounce of comedic self-awareness. Originally, Everything is Fine was going to be a spoken scene, tasked with writing this scene, it became clear to me, that the only way to adequately represent the struggles of quarantine in a four minute segment was through song.
The music of Everything is Fine revolves around one central chromatic descending riff. This serves as a proxy for the spirally feelings seemingly everyone was experiencing for the majority of the previous year. |

Redemption
|
Redemption is my favorite addition to the musical, and I particularly appreciate what it adds to the personification of 2020. I am of the opinion the greatest weakness of our show was the underdeveloped characters. We never get to truly know any of our characters on a deeper level, making our stereotypical "happy ending" feel deservingly unearned. This song attempts to remedy that shortcoming in our main characters (2020 and 2012).
This song is a duet between 2020 and 2012 and attempts to define their contradicting motives and where they need to go from where they are. |
